Sixth Plate

A STAR AND CRESCENT PIN. I have been unable to identify the emblem on the man’s cravat even though it was very distinctive and clearly represented when this resealed sixth plate dag was taken. The gent’s elongated face was partially framed by a pair of fuzzy sideburns, which in the early 1850s was an unusual style. Brilliant light created a fine three-dimensional appearance of the fellow’s attractive face. The breadth of mid-tones was superlatively rendered. Squiggly lines of patina hug the lower corners and there are a couple mat scrapes on the marvelously rich silvery surface. This portrait is kept in a leather case in two parts.
