Sixth Plate

APPARENTLY . . . The newspaper seals that secured the fellow’s sixth plate daguerreotype were original. Casey left pieces that he could salvage in the bottom of a separated leather case. He soaked the plate in distilled water to remove thick white haze. The silver had a SCOVILLS hallmark. Curiously, the daguerreian did NOT buff the gent’s palette very well. I think the chemistry was off also. However, the illumination was adequate and that elaborate painted scene behind the subject was unique to me. The white dots, one above his eye, were part of the imprecise process I suspect. This is a funky portrait that looks slightly better in hand.
