A BALANCING ACT! Isn’t it always the risk when buying potentially fine six plate dags with terribly filthy glass that once the restoration is completed not all those specks and flecks will disappear? Here is a prime example of an intelligent lady who sat for a very competent daguerreotypist just after 1850. When she was handed the remarkably hand tinted likeness it must have been a joy to view for all her family and friends. The detailed application of colors on that case was superbly rendered and her facial tones were revealed as lifelike. The aging process was unkind, yet how could I not preserve her for a future collector? The cover of her sixth plate leather case is gone.
