CHASE DID THE WORK! The portly woman probably had her likeness drawn and painted on paper prior to the commencement of the daguerreian era in 1839. Either she or a family member brought the artwork to Mr. Chase, either Ezra or Lorenzo, who both operated in Boston at separate locations when this piece was copied onto a resealed quarter plate dag in the late 1840s. The surface is absolutely wonderful as the silver is seen at different angles. The tonality changes radically. Only a few re-tarnish brown dots are present inside the oval brass mat stamped “CHASE” in the lower right corner. The image is in a leather case with a detached cover.
