"PICTURE . . . Of Grandmother Gould to be kept in the family" was inscribed on the thinnest piece of lightweight paper I have ever seen in flowing ink by a steady hand. I found the folded paper underneath her resealed sixth plate inside an older repaired spine on a complete leather case. She was taken circa 1850 in Boston by one of the Chase Brothers. GG’s (granny Gould’s) likeness has fantastic contrast and walk around depth. The exceptional close up portrait has an odd tarnish area on the left. Faint tinting remains on her wonderful face that supported her friendly mouth and deep dark all-knowing eyes.
