TAKEN BY CHASE. As you all know, attempting to accurately reproduce wonderful resealed sixth plates that have broad tones and fine contrast can be tricky at best. This young gentleman visited one of the Chase brothers when they were operating in Boston most likely circa 1850. While never considered top tier Boston daguerreians, both men were highly regarded and their bodies of extant examples are impressive. The tinting on the lad’s face was lifelike and the reflected depth exceptional. A piece of dust on the dark jacket was trapped underneath the gold chloride. The mold spider to the left of the subject’s head is rather faint. Patina adds natural hues to the likeness held inside a full leather case.
