WAS HE REALLY . . . A member of the House of Representatives from Bloomfield PA as the pen inscription indicated on a scrap of paper that came with this outstanding resealed sixth plate portrait? The holographic depth is so outstanding that it seems possible to stand behind and off to one side of the subject, identified as “Mr. Stroup”. Didn’t he appear to be quite tired and wary of this event? In fact, I don’t believe a razor had ridden along his jawline for at least a couple of days. Maybe he displayed that cane to keep his hand calm. The contrast and tonality along with superlative illumination all worked in harmony to make this sparkling portrait so successful. He is kept in the bottom of a leather case from circa 1854.
