TAKEN IN BOSTON! What has surprised me, is that the lass sat for this simple yet absolutely astounding sixth plate portrait circa 1845! I base my attribution and date from the SCOVILLS HALLMARK, the plate preparation, the double silvered plate, the use of a skylight, the razor-sharp focus, the thick brass protector and a case that was synonymous with their earlier work, before the classic black leather push button case. Finally, the gal’s symbolistic yet stylish pose and the edge of their posing chair all point in the direction of the great Boston daguerreians, Southworth & Hawes. The specks didn’t soak off in distilled water and are the result of badly decayed glass. Beautiful patina surrounds the lovely young sitter who was so perfectly posed and taken.
