ABOUT HIS CHARACTER. In my second image a rather quaint description of Joseph Ludlam was penned by an unknown hand on a scrap of paper pinned to the red silk pad of a complete leather case that was popular circa 1843-1845. Mr. Ludlam’s painted portrait, which was copied onto this heavy SCOVILLS marked sixth plate was most likely reproduced in that timespan. The bottom of the original frame is seen inside the oval brass mat. The subject was well-depicted and actually quite handsome. The operator who made the reproduction used a nice palette of pigments to enhance his face and hands. There are mold spots on the silver. The gent is much livelier when the object is viewed.
