HER CASUAL POSE! The youthful lady seemed so at ease in front of a camera that I wonder if she was familiar with the daguerreian. NO, not that kind of familiar. Anyway, whomever was responsible for the likeness done on a newly taped sixth plate really created a fine image. She held this book: "Phelps's Traveller's Guide Through the United States”. It was initially published circa 1850 when the lass posed for her portrait. Here is the cover and the entire book reproduced on line: http://railroads.unl.edu/documents/rail.PTG1850.pdf
The cover to her leather case has disappeared. Gold and red tinting embellished her fine dag.
