Sixth Plate

A THUMB SUCKER! Without the oval mat to isolate the baby, two things were quickly apparent. Mom was responsible to hold the tyke as still as possible and the daguerreian used a weirdly cut sixth plate piece of stock, with a “Star Double 40 J. P.” hallmark to record the kid. The brass opening successfully framed the babe clothed in a white dress that changes colors in places when the loose cover of the very worn leather case is opened. There are mat abrasions and mold spiders. I don’t know what caused the black spot on the lad’s arm. Pale oxidation covers much of the silver and there is a piece of dust adhered to that mark on the woman’s dress. Restoration was done.
