WHAT'S IN A NAME? "Elenor Grieves Joyce Cornish aged 29 years in the year 1857" was written in period ink in the remaining half of her leather case. Ms. Cornish posed for a competent daguerreotypist near the end of the era. He recorded her faithfully in sixth plate size then used a marvelous painterly imagination to accent her flesh tones, jewelry, the cloth underneath her arm and that book she held. There is fine reflected depth and wide ranging tones, along with great contrast. Patina flows freely inside the brass scalloped mat and there are many tiny white specks on Elena’s pleasant portrait. If I hadn’t known her age, I would have thought she was younger. She has a soft expression and a relaxed demeanor.
