WHO WAS THE GENIUS . . . That so successfully placed this adorable child on his/her double silvered sixth plate and completed the package using a domed piece of cover glass sometime after 1855? The child’s remarkable leather push button copy of the classic Eickmeyer case that was patented in 1855, has a lovely plain burgundy plush pad inside. I have wondered if the kid’s miraculous portrait was actually copied onto this finely tinted piece of bright silver, or was the soft focus done intentionally. Viewing the naked plate doesn’t provide any clue to that line of inquiry. Funky lines of tarnish are visible on the left and more patina encircles the tiny subject. There are also a few mold spiders. The stupendous effort is still very compelling today folks. The next collector will be delighted and thankful to add this masterpiece to their collection!
