A PROFESSIONAL GENTLEMAN. The handsome fellow sat for his resealed sixth plate probably in the mid-1850s. The illumination entered the operating room from high above, beyond the subject’s left shoulder and made his ebony hues skin shimmer. The man’s beautiful eyes looked in the direction of the camera but was he actually watching his maker or were they focused past the camera. The patron of the art of daguerreotypy certainly appeared to be comfortable as he posed for his portrait. The patina has encroached on that hand placed on the tabletop. It has a rainbow effect on the opposite side. There is one spot of tarnish on the chap’s white vest. This was a remarkable daguerreotype produced in the mid-1850s. The thermoplastic case has a repair and chips.
