D09-202. "GODDARD . . . WOONSOCKET" was stamped in the lower left corner of the oval brass mat surrounding the cunning kid posed for a tinted sixth plate portrait. The most remarkable feature of the entire tableau is the child's multi colored dress that changes hues as the piece is examined. Goddard also tinted the lad's flesh tones and painted part of the tablecloth red. Extraordinary reflected brilliance created depth that is rarely seen in most likenesses. Three visible mold spiders live on the left side of the image that has a perfect oval of patina except on the right were it has flared further into the picture. Goddard was active in both Cumberland and Woonsocket circa 1849 and only in the latter city circa 1855-1859 according to John Craig. The late leather case, embossed with a war eagle perched on a shield surround by battle flags, is in two pieces. $485
