| D11-105. A FOREIGN PYRAMID. Notice that the women are wearing all black, yet they certainly don't look like they were in mourning. Their expressions are almost jovial. The pass partout mat and lovely black wooden frame created a presentation that definitely feels like the dag was made across the pond on the continent. Located outdoors on a day that had a translucent evenly distributed canopy of clouds overhead, the three adults were audaciously posed! With opposite elbows of the man and older woman dramatically thrust outwards their hands formed a strong arrangement across the lower third of the archivally taped quarter sized daguerreotype. And the young lady in the center rested a hand on each of her companion's shoulders. However, the strength of the composition is in the faces of the gent, whose firm jaw was cast from stone as he focused his deep-set eyes past the plane of the plate. The woman, whose splendid semi-profile countenance was so impressive, also peered across the camera's position. The dark layered fabric on her head covered one of the most impressive figure studies I have ever seen in a daguerreotype. The out-of-focus swirling blur of leaves and vines in the background conveys a sense of motion, while the subjects remained calm and secure within the maelstrom. There are very faint brown specks on the middle character's face, a few blue dots scattered about and a mat line across the bottom from a previous seal. The reflected depth and contrast are both superlative! The exterior dimensions of the frame are 8 inches by 8 3/4 inches. $1,500 |
