| D10-D. RELATIONSHIP. The great operators, like Jeremiah Gurney, not only produced technically excellent quarter plate daguerreotypes with amazing hand colors added as the final embellishment, but they were also capable of posing their clients with the mastery of an artist. Turning this mother sideways and having her concentrate in a direction away from the camera, while supporting and calming her adorable little girl, helped create an inspirational portrait. Gurney's imprint is stamped in the lower right corner of the oval mat, along with 349 Broadway (NY). I removed the original, thick glass and paper seals. They had been cut many years ago and that might suggest why the mother and daughter are vignetted by such broad, encroaching patina. They are still perfectly rendered on a nearly flawless resealed surface. The bottom of the leather case has a floral theme. $585 |
