D10-a. LET ME SAY . . . That only a very sophisticated buyer of fine daguerreotypes would probably comment favorably when their posed together quarter size leather case is opened. Usually I witness similar images examined for a millisecond then put back on the table along with all the other common portraits. An older couple, not very wealthy etc., so what? Let me explain my own level of fascination. She was wearing a wedding band while he was not. Their maker seated them together and she was nearly his height. He asked the gent to place his arm on a table and lean in that direction for stability. Following more instructions, he looked past the camera while his wife placed her hand on his shoulder and strongly focused across the silvery plane also away from the lens. Had she looked directly at her spouse, I probably would keep them for another nine years. The illumination entered the space from the left and lit her entire face evenly. Her husband was sculpted by the light. Their three hands anchor the composition that has plenty of space above them. The couple is extremely well focused. The depth is sensationally holographic and the contrast is impressive. They were animated by being themselves and not having been posed in a traditional manner. I wonder if they were as progressive in their lives together as in this tableau the daguerreotypist created? I would like to have known them. The likeness was resealed but has out gassed some. The condition is excellent with a few brown tarnish dots mostly in the upper right corner. $495
