Surely the life long partners recorded in their resealed quarter size masterpiece couldn't have expected such brilliance from their maker upon initially entering his domain, correct? They might have been shown a display of his work before allowing the daguerreotypist to place them simply but elegantly in front of his professionally polished brass lens attached to a large wooden camera. The slightly mottled background has a texture that softly diffused his inspired use of light to bathe the duo so dramatically that every fold in their clothing has depth. (A teeny white sliver of the windowsill below the woman's elbow against the mat is visible). More importantly, their facial features were permanently etched on his highly reflective perfectly polished plate. Superb contrast and outstanding tonality plus the immaculate condition have harmoniously created their superb rendering. Beautiful patina traces the shape of the mat. The leather case, with an odd geometric theme common circa 1846-47 was held together for a time with pieces of tape across the spine that has been removed. $525 |
