| D08-46. "Wm. C. NORTH . . . Cleveland" was stamped in the corner of a plain quarter plate size scalloped brass mat and was placed on the retaped image of the older couple. The obvious hot spot on the gent's head was caused when North's illumination, entered the space from above the husband and wife high on the left, reflected off one of the man's lenses in his wire rimmed glasses. While he exudes power and importance, posed there so stiffly stern, his lady, who was his equal in every regard except maybe in public appearances, still retained her impressive beauty that gracefully matured from her younger years. He was a gentleman of wealth and regional fame for sure, visiting North's gallery with his lovely wife probably when it was located at 81 Superior St. I suspect their likeness on the expertly polished silver mirror was made circa 1852-53. The incredible strength of their bodies as they filled the frame would have overwhelmed persons with less interesting and strong faces. The myriad of mold spiders doesn't inhibit the excellence of the image. The bottom of a common leather case remains to complete their presentation. $465 |
