D06-146. ANOTHER FAMILIAR SEAT! The maker of the marvelous pair of archivally sealed sixth plates knew exactly how he would place the couple in their common leather case that has a repaired paper hinge. He positioned them facing each other separately except that their portraits are laterally reversed which meant that the husband was actually facing towards the left and his darling wife was placed oppositely. Hope I just didn't confuse you. Each image has stunning depth and superb contrast. Both surfaces have brown spots and scattered patina. When I bought the pair recently, the original seals were still partially intact. Both copper/silver mirrors were cut short and the corners were rounded. The daguerreian (who I think might have been Abraham Bogardus in New York City) used balanced light on his clients. The exquisitely buffed surfaces, the distinctive chair and tablecloth were indicators of my attribution. The gent was instructed to look past the lens while his wife has a more engaging gaze directly into the lens. A pair of powerful portraits presented together. $315
