D05-58. WITH A CYANOTYPE! "Rev. Carlton Hurd, died in 1855" is the information that came with this superlative sixth plate likeness showing the good preacher almost in profile. He was a rugged New England man of the cloth for sure. If his physical appearance in this remarkable daguerreotype translated into the brand of fire and brimstone speaker he must have been, he would certainly have created a formidable impression in the pulpit of the Congregational Church in Fryeburg Maine where he was the pastor. I did a very rapid web search on a Fryeburg web site and found out this information:
Hurd, Carlton (Rev) D.D. BIRTH: 60 yrs DEATH: Dec 6, 1855 CEM.: PINE GROVE
I believe that the image was made circa 1852-53. Which begs the question, what happened to Rev. Hurd, who appears to be robust and in the prime of his life? Certainly the next owner of this holographic masterpiece will take more time to fully research the preacher. The thinnest brass mat, lined with thick paper, surrounds him. I also questioned the identity of the daguerreian. This wasn't any itinerant's effort! The operator must have practiced for years to achieve such brilliance on silver. There is nothing on the surface that should dissuade anyone from purchasing the archivally resealed gem. The lovely intact leather case has a rare geometric theme. A paper label on the spine and another one glued to the beautiful plush red velvet pad provide Rev. Hurd's information. If all this isn't enough there is a 2 3/8ths x 3 1/8th cyanotype copy of the naked plate! With his full name written on the reverse. Please see the second scan. $675
