D05-134. MRS. MARY CONKLYN JINKINS . . . wife of Wm. Jinkins &mother . . . is where the inscription in the bottom of the complete leather case ended, although there does seem to have been some erasure of a couple more words. Mary visited one of the Plumbe chain of daguerreian studios and sat for her elegant resealed sixth plate. The operator had the woman place her arm on his cloth-draped tabletop. She elected to hold a large lacy kerchief in the hand that rested against her waist. Mrs. Jinkins wore a black velvet band around her head underneath that white cap adorned with teeny flowers that were tinted red. The Paisley design on her impressive shawl was colored red and blue. Much of the surface has a hazy brown patina inside a darker layer of oxidation. When the fine portrait is turned at a 15-degree angle away from the admirer the reflected depth is awesome. So is the contrast! She becomes life-like! The sizeable brooch pinned to her white collar and checkered ribbons displays a scene with large trees in the foreground. Each of those three rings was painted with gold! The white specks on the right side are part of the tarnish. I should mention that Ò5979Ó is also penned with period brown ink under her image. A variant of the Grecian Urn adorns the cover and the reverse is plain. $445
