D05-124. UNFOLDED BEFORE HIS EYES. What was passing through his mind as this ancient, still spry and handsome man sat silently for his professionally taken quarter plate portrait that has been retaped by another hand? His mane of hair, more a whitish gray than the original hue, is still thick and full of life, mimicking the sitter himself. His down turned mouth belied the fact that he was probably very friendly and eager to share his life's experiences with anyone who might have the time to listen. There is a pleasant sparkle in his dark recessed eyes. The gentleman's craggy face is a feature to be visually explored. What a long lovely nose and massive ears. I suspect the man towered above the inhabitants of his locale. There is power exhibited here, in his pose and inner spirit. His arrangement was done in a classic loosely composed bust portrait. Oxidation is seen on the bright reflective surface. Illumination from the left side created wonderful contrast and solid tonality. There are mat abrasions on the bottom and along the left side, which might be hidden with a professional restoration. The remainder of the spots and dots visible are completely harmless to his visage. A fine pushbutton leather case with a detached hinge holds the subject. $425
