D04-142. THREE DIFFERENT GAZES. This quarter plate dag of a mother and her two children is an interesting study in how people felt while visiting a studio to have their likeness taken. The girl has a pouting, annoyed "is this over yet?" look on her face while her brother appears very nearly mischievous. Their mother, who wrapped herself in her shawl, remained calm and probably was just glad that her kids sat still. Their portrait is remarkable from a technical point of view and also visually, since the sitters had such wide-ranging emotions. The unidentified operator illuminated the threesome with flowing brightness from a skylight overhead. The delineations of the subjects' facial features and their clothing, especially mother's lacy bodice were superbly captured on the impressive surface. The image is resealed, although not by us. Many of the white specks are dust particles under the glass. There is tarnish around the edges and a pale yellow, secondary area of patina in the middle of the plate. There is one blue speck on the woman's dress. The image comes in a dark blue Philadelphia style push button case with a red pad. $665
