D03-225. AMAZING LACE! This woman's lace cap is beautifully made and also in crisp focus. You can see every part of the hand sewn, decorated design. The older woman's spectacled and wrinkled face, surrounded by graying curls, sits at an angle to the camera, creating a perfect pose. I don't think that this was her first daguerreotype experience. She obviously had this arrangement all figured out. I imagine her arriving at a Boston studio (my supposition is made because the elegant woman was purchased from an impressive group of Boston school daguerreotypes all showing family members) very much in control. The maker bathed her superbly sculpted face with rays of sunshine flowing through a skylight that was directly above her. He achieved absolutely astounding holographic depth. The richness of the blacks and the stunning details in the highlights are both sumptuous. There isn't a hint of reflection in the lenses of her fancy glasses; which indicates true professional merit. Being a practical and experienced woman, she picked out her sixth plate black leather push button case and oval mat with great assurance. Please do not let all those scattered little white specks seen in the scan convince you that they are too noticeable. When the outstanding achievement is viewed in the proper light, only several of the mold spiders are noticeable. Lovely natural hues of blues follow the outline of that classic oval mat. The archivally sealed, resilvered likeness is a masterpiece! $545
