D02-108. TAKEN AT HOME? Did dad invest in a daguerreotype outfit and decide to perfect his experiments by capturing two of the most difficult subjects imaginable: his adorable daughter or might it be his son, and the family mutt? Bright sunlight brilliantly bathed both dog and child as it entered the space from the right side. The man used a piece of cloth, partially seen behind the subjects on the left, as a reflector. I believe that he posed the pair on a table top that he covered with a decorative cloth, then in a stroke of cleverness, he slid something underneath the area of the dog's chest and covered it also. The child was obviously coerced into holding her (his) pet's head as tightly as possible. Should I dwell on the remarkable costume the kid wore; along with the crude splashes of blue that make this stupendous image even more charming? If you really concentrate of the child's determined face you will notice that there was very slight movement. Her (his) furry friend shook his (her) head with vigor. Aside from a flurry of mold spiders on the archivally resealed surface, the sixth plate presents us with a splendid view of a youngster posed with a favorite canine. The beautiful, primitive effort is kept in a separated leather case. $3,500
