D01-128. GEORGE VALENTINE RAND. Don't you just adore his middle name? Mr. Rand, whose blue tinted eyes are rather odd, to go along with his overall goofy appearance, was purchased with a wealth of family information (see scan below) that is rarely seen with resealed quarter plate daguerreotypes. His maker was Charles Thayer of Charlestown, MA. According to the information, George sat for his likeness on the 20th of February 1850, which just happened to be his 21st birthday! He was the eldest of TWELVE SIBLINGS!!! The most amazing information is the birth of a brother, Rufus Everett Rand, Dec. 18th 1843. He died almost two years later on Dec. 16th, 1845. Then, another brother was born April 30th, 1846. Thomas and Eliza named that baby, if you guessed it my compliments to you, RUFUS EVERETT RAND!!! I have never seen that before. I mean really, that poor boy had the same name as a dearly departed brother. How weird is that? Back to George. He was tinted by Thayer with a delicate touch and posed in a pedestrian fashion, leaning on a table with a cloth cover that I have never seen before. There are three mold mites above his shoulder and a spider on his jacket. The image overall is rather beautiful as the used intact floral case is held open. $525
