#616. & 616a. AMAZING PAIR! Who was this young man? He visited a daguerreotypist that was a highly skilled technician. His maker had acquired an impressive painted scenic background that he used for selected clients when he made masterful sixth plates of them. While the tablecloth and padded wooden chair certainly are familiar props, I am at a loss to positively state the daguerreian's name. In the first likeness the handsome hunk sat sideways on that chair and contemplated his life's experiences. Then he turned and leaned upon the tabletop. His expression reveals a spark of recognition; something very important or dramatic that had occurred. His lovely light eyes are glowing and his broad lips ready to curve into a soft smile. Was he an actor or a writer or a visionary? He could have been a troubled chap with enough money to buy his way into and out of scrapes, with enough left over for his visit to the studio that had to be in a large city. Notice how exquisitely the radiance from above bathes the gent. The pinpoint focus is outstanding. Oddly enough, his white shirt, tie and collar are slightly solarized. The tonality is excellent and the contrast is first rate. There is heavy speckled patina on both portraits. White specks and flecks can also be seen on the archivally sealed jewels. Hints of the awesome tinting remain, when each completely leather cased dag is angled in strong light. The romantic fellow's likenesses are sold together. $5,000
