D06-162. SEWING BASKET! Okay, the woman brought her basket to the daguerreian's gallery in some small town. She might have asked if she could be taken in a pose similar to her friend Helen's (who had been daguerreotyped elsewhere with her sewing implements neatly arranged near her basket). The operator, seeing several people gawking in the windows behind his camera thought, "If I allow that it will take too much time." He told the lady where to sit, handed her a case to hold and placed the hallowed basket on the table next to her arm, promising her that he would tint it after her face had been secured on his silvered retaped sixth plate. The disappointment on the sitter's face is evident. Tarnish has become splotchy over the years and there are a few brown spots too. The man did splash some color on the surface and painted her jewelry with gold. A previous person used scotch tape to attach the leather case halves. $160
