D05-24. HMMM! When one of Rufus Anson's operators got it correct, that studio's sixth plate daguerreotypes were very impressive. The darling little boy, from a wealthy family no doubt, sat complacently for his retaped portrait. He is so calm and relaxed. Most youngsters his age, about 4, would have been antsy. His pudgy face and hands were nicely colored. The crisp white collar and those shirtsleeves contrast with his gorgeous jacket. The mid-tones in this likeness are outstanding and so is the reflected depth. There are teeny brown spots in places and a curious haziness on the surface. However, unless you turn the image to the negative (to see the haze) or us an 8x loupe to search for the dots, they are not a hindrance to the overall appearance. Slivers of patina touch the oval mat in places, which is stamped: "ANSON 589 BROADWAY" in opposite corners. The red velvet pad has the same information and adds "NY". It is interesting that the lad's portrait was placed in a leather case with a Patriotic motif. The spine is apart. $495
