D05-12. FOR SUCH A NEAT GUY . . . one would expect him to visit a competent studio operator to have his sixth plate daguerreotype taken. I should probably be able to instantly identify the chap's maker because of that odd little table and the decorative wooden chair. However, I don't recall seeing this combination used previously. The operator used all the photo tricks and added embellishments to please his client, who obviously approved and purchased the retaped piece. He asked the sitter to lean slightly towards the table. Sophisticated light shined down on him. His tie ornament, ring and even his watch fob were colored in great detail. The neutral backdrop contrasted nicely with his darker suit. His white shirt and collar are bright. Yet nothing could be done about the man's ah, face. He probably wasn't handsome in life. I wonder if this portrait made him look BETTER? Fingers of oxidation float on the otherwise perfect surface. At one angle, there are strong buff marks. He is held in a mother of pearl case that has an awesome cover (see second scan). However, the ornately embossed spine with "TOKEN" on it is completely torn asunder. $175
