D04-71. HER GOLDEN NECKLACE! What a pair! They both have the cuteness that only a child can possess. They are so innocent and endearing, at the same moment! Another trait that only children seem to be able to manage. It is rare to see a dag with two children that embody the qualities of youth such as these two do. He is trying to act older and be a good brother by embracing his sister, which could also have been a suggestion by the daguerreotypist in order to keep him still. She also portrays an attitude above her age by wearing a necklace that is clearly not hers; it is wrapped around her neck twice and still hangs rather low. It does provide the right touch to her look. Then, at the same moment she is thrust back into childhood while clenching her small weeping bouquet. I would almost believe they could be twins if they were the same age because they look so much alike. Most likely this image was cleaned years ago; I bet at one time the tinting on her necklace and the flowers shone brightly. A high percentage of daguerreotypes have been chemically cleaned and it is evident when there is soft tinting (as in her necklace), and an overall flatness, which this image has. The sixth plate hasn't lost all its pop, and the content makes up for any slight flatness in the contrast. There is a tiny scratch on the lad's plaid jacket, nearly invisible mat marks in a couple places and a few specks on the surface. A paper embossed half case of a floral design holds the resealed plate. $345
