D04-229. THE BROWS! A dark eyed mother with a long angular face sat tack still while she held her squiggly baby as they were taken on a highly polished sixth sized daguerreotype. Although the occasion must have been a happy time for the mother, there is an undercurrent of deep foreboding. The unbelievable illumination with the main light entering the room from the left and (if one was used) the reflector on the right being too far from the pair, thus creating an eerie visual effect. The lace on the lady's pelerine contrasts impressively against her dark dress. The hazy area across the bottom of the plate adds to the mystery. I believe that was a technical fault. There are mat abrasions as seen in the scan, and nearly invisible daguerreian measles on the retaped surface. Mom and child are held in the bottom of a leather case. $265
