D04-170. OFF TO THE SIDE. I suppose the daguerreotypist could have positioned his camera or his subject just a tad to one side in order to frame her in the center of the plate, but perhaps off center subjects were his specialty? I think the extra space created an interesting effect. Since we can't see what supports the woman and she is not leaning on anything, she seems really alone. The somber gal tilted her head in the same direction as her nose that even has a natural left leaning angle. Her left eye is rather droopy. Whether this came from a nervous twitch or something else, I don't know. She is solemnly looking upward. The resealed sixth plate has some swirling buff marks and strong patina inside the scalloped mat. Those white specks are barely visible when the very unusual floral leather theme case is opened. The bright burgundy velvet pad is impressed with flowers. $135
