If some idiot hadn't attempted to clean the woman's face, which was beautifully composed peering down at her daughter, I would have made a scan of the naked plate before I archivally retaped the piece. The brass mat appears to have been original to the splendid portrait. There are a few mold mites, some mat abrasions and one bubble of tarnish erupting from the lower right corner on the superbly brown toned surface. There are a couple teeny blue specks on the baby's face. Pressed into the worn velvet pad on the loose cover of the leather case is the maker's identity. I have used every technique imaginable, to read the letters, without success. $460
