D01-47. HER APRON IS UNUSUAL! Although I'm not certain, I will suggest that the young woman posed for her retaped sixth plate portrait was someone's domestic help. She would have been a fixture in the household, highly regarded by her employers. Her costume is rather plain and her appearance indicates that she was from the working class. If you doubt that, look closely at her worn hands. The daguerreotypist didn't use any devices or frills to enhance her image. We have a straightforward picture of a young workingwoman. The plate has excellent tones and contrast. The depth is strong and I would be remiss if I didn't add that I like the placement of here hands. There is spotty tarnish just inside the mat, one nearly invisible brown dot on her dark collar and a few tiny mat marks. She is kept in the bottom half of a pressed paper case with a rare design showing repetitive circles. $435
