D01-145. APPREHENSIVE YOUTH. Perhaps this young lad isn't worried about anything at all, but instead maybe the maker, Chase of Boston, posed him. In my opinion though, he was intentionally told to turn and look away as he is. Doing so, Chase made this young lad look older than he actually is. On his shoulder is a nearly invisible crease, and then a lighter one on his bow tie extending over his shoulder. There is a nice frame of tarnish that works with the style of this mid-1850's sixth plate. The daguerreotype has been resealed, and the leather case is whole with a floral design. The mat is stamped: Chase, 173 Wash'n (Washington) St. (Boston). Lorenzo, who began his career in the city at least 10 years earlier, was an accomplished daguerreian when the lad visited his studio. $325
