CASE2. COMPOSITION CASE. Figure 19 in "American Miniature Case Art" by Floyd and Marion Rinhart uses the identical quarter plate case I am offering for sale as an example of, "a molded plastic piece applied directly to the wood frame in place of the conventional leather top". At the time the book was published, in 1969, the Rinharts were uncertain if this was a transitional case, leading into the very popular thermoplastic cases or whether it was constructed to compete against them. I don't know the answer myself. However, I can assure all of you that the style is extremely rare in this condition. The opposite corners, upper right and lower left have diagonal hairline cracks. There is a slight chip near the center. I have never owned another case similar to this and haven't seen more then a dozen. The brass hardware, two latches and eyelets are intact. The reverse is a wonderful combination of geometric and floral designs stamped into the leather. Inside, the deep red velvet pad has an ornate impression with a large two-handled vase as the central theme. Casey has added a fine leather spine. $385
