EEW-22. SIGNED IN THE SILVER . . . by the maker Silvester! Unfortunately I don't know any more about the daguerreotypist except that Erin and I both believe that the suave young gentleman posed for his archivally taped sixth plate somewhere in Great Britain. The heavy plate has no hallmark and it was primitively resilvered. Very wide paper tape covered most of the reverse. Stylistically speaking the fellow's pose is very un-American! Sure we occasionally see someone turned sideways with an arm across the top of the chair, but this guy's angle of energy is really directed in a flow to the left side of the surface. His liquid eyes, highlighted with green/blue pigments gazed dreamingly away from the lens. That vest he wore looks very European to me. Erin kept the intact leather case that he arrived in when she made the purchase a couple years ago. While the design is unusual the case construct indicates it was made here in the USA. The most prominent aspect of the likeness is the surreal tinting and you will only know how stupendous it is if YOU purchase the work of art. Remember, the Brits never considered daguerreotypes as a new form of art. They conceded the importance grudgingly then proceeded to paint every surface as though it was a miniature either done on canvas or ivory! The spectacular nature of this example will be fully appreciated by a connoisseur of daguerreotypical posing and painting while the chap is admired under a strong light source! $975
