| EEW-124. THE SIGNS . . . are unmistakable according to my wife Carol, who is a pediatrics nurse. The rather apprehensive young woman clutching her young son was definitely pregnant when she had their sixth plate portrait taken sometime after 1850. First observe her swollen fingers and very puffy face. Not convinced? No woman would have worn a crinoline and permitted it to bulge forward while having her likeness made. That round area is most likely child number two. And her squirming adorable little tyke was oblivious to everything except the fact that he didn't want to sit with mom in front of a large scary camera. Waves of patina, from darker shades to lighter flow towards the pair. The silver has no flaws except dots in the tarnish. Wonderful depth, excellent contrast and much better clarity then seen in my scan add to this rarely witnessed genre of daguerreotype. Only the bottom of their leather case remains. $350 |
