DW60. BEAVER HAT. It is almost funny that this fellow chose, or ended up with a pair of roses for the design of his case pad, and a matching design on the sixth plate whole leather case. The man also might have thought that he bore some resemblance to Napoleon. Maybe he just liked the look of his hand in his vest. His bushy beard is almost as big as the large beaver hat he holds in his lap with his other hand. The buttons on his sleeve are sewn as though they might suggest that the man was a sea captain, home from the North Atlantic and taking enough time, circa 1846, to pose for his archivally taped likeness. Not to say this isn't a somewhat strong portrait, but I wonder how much greater he would have appeared with this unique hat upon his head. The plate is in fairly good shape. There is broad patina framing him. There are a few small spots to the left and right of him. $195
