D04-100. REFLECTIVE EYES. The aura of this man seems to have somehow transferred itself into the tarnish that encircles the plate at the mat's edge. Like him, it is mostly uniform. There is an odd spot towards the top. The man's eyes are what set him apart from the crowd. Other than that, this resealed sixth plate is like many other fine portraits. It's as if he thought blinking his eyes would ruin the daguerreotype in some way. So, as he tried hard not to flinch, he opened them even wider. Since he didn't commit such a grievous error as quickly closing them they were able to gather a stark white reflection, larger in the right than the left; which would mean the light source was coming from the right side as you look at him. A hot spot on the right side of his forehead also supports this theory. The bright reflection in his eyes is likely a reflector board, which was used to enhance the natural light. Mold spiders are present in places on the surface. A half leather case with an interesting geometric design and green piping holds him. $170
