D03-78. BABY'S MOTHER. At first, I contemplated the relationship between the child and the woman, deciding that their sixth plate presents mom holding her newest offspring. Their resealed image was taken by "E.H. Stokes, Trenton (NJ)", which is clearly seen imprinted along the bottom of the brass mat. Edward Stokes commenced making daguerreotypes in 1854. Craig's notes that in his earliest advertising, the entrance of his studio was "through William J. Owens' clothing store". That must have been an extremely convenient arrangement for the daguerreian and outfitter. If you look closely, there are very faint wipes on the surface of the portrait. Nice patina and a few specks are also seen. The leather case has a broken hinge. $165
