D03-179. GEORGE APPLETON LAFFORD . . . was written with a pencil, up-side-down in the remaining half of the leather case. Don't even attempt to go there boys and girls. The grandmotherly woman IS NOT George in drag! Well, I don't think so . . . Only the maker, Mr. White (White's is stamped in the corner of the brass mat) and the subject would have known for sure. I ended my count at approximately 30 listings for "White" in Craig's compendium of daguerreians. Most of them were active in the 1850's when she was posed motionless before the camera. Actually, the woman's sixth plate that has been archivally taped, has a wonderful, although subtle composition. White asked her to sit forward from the chair back, which caused her to lean slightly forward. That relaxed her shoulders and she tilted her head; all the while watching him work. Excellent technical properties and razor sharp focus are on display, along with strong condition. $165
