D00-22. "E. SHEWELL, ARTIST ... S.W. cor 5th & Walnut Sts." is stamped in gold on a narrow black strip label that was used by daguerreians sporadically on either side of 1850. It was most popular in an area encompassing Philadelphia, Baltimore and Cincinnati, where Shewell was active in 1853. When I purchased the piece, he was covered by a white hazy cloud from a previous cleaning (most likely from the use of cyanide). I quickly recleaned the plate without disturbing the oxidation surrounding him and I was rewarded with a flawless surface. I reglassed and resealed the sixth plate package. The fellow will make a nice addition to a collector assembling maker marked examples. He is kept in the bottom half of a common leather case. $185
