Dennis A. Waters, Fine Daguerreotypes

Ambrotypes

A-133. LOTS OF GOLD. Even the baby has gold jewelry! The woman is wearing a great, lacy black dress and an interesting lace thing on her head. The sixth plate ambro is in very nice condition and comes in a case with a split spine. The condition is very nice. $110

A-134. GREAT CHAIR. This woman was Anna Maria Darlington. Her sixth plate ambro is nicely tinted and in excellent condition. The image is painted black only behind her, giving us the nice pale background. She comes in a full case where the spine is nearly broken. $75
Tintypes

T-451. HOLDING HANDS. I wonder if the photographer posed them or if they posed themselves? The tin has some light marks. $18
T-453. HOLDING HIS HAT. This quarter plate tin is a nice portrait of this young man. I like the painted backdrop. The rug looks exceptionally worn. The image has light marks. $22
T-455. BOATING. Of course, the oar, like the fake boat, was a studio prop. Don't you just love their bathing suits though? The woman's sleeves are quite interesting. She holds a fan and a hat. The tin has a few light marks. $40
T-452. LITTLE GIRL. This tin has some light marks and some residue at the bottom. The black mark is image loss. $8
T-454. NOW STAY STILL. This man was so engrossed with trying to keep his dog still that he forgot to look at the camera. The tin has some light marks and bends in the lower portion. The scan shows those, but much more so than in person. $35
Cartes de Visites & Cabinet Cards

CDV-566. NICE DESIGN. I am a fan both of the raised oval portraits and of these geometric designs. This example is by Frank Z. Fritz in Lambertville, NJ. There are some light marks. The man's cheeks are lightly tinted. $30
CW-593. REVEREND STARR KING. Thomas Starr King was a famed preacher in Boston before he made his way to San Francisco. I've had images of him before, but didn't really know much about him. It seems he was instrumental in helping convince California to remain in the Union during the Civil War. A notable figure indeed. This image looks to be a copy of an artwork, which could have been a copy itself of a dag. The photographer was J. W. Hurn of Philadelphia. The image is in good condition. $20
CDV-567. WHIPPLE KIDS. The back reads, "Ralph's children by the last wife. Louisa died four or five years ago. The boy Willie still living." The image was taken at Whipple's 96 Washington St. address in Boston. There are a few light marks on the image. $32
CDV-569. FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHER. And out in Montana, no less. The image has light marks and is faded. $20
CDV-568. ATHELETE. Just look at those muscles! I wonder what he did? He wears a cap and some odd socks. The image is by Palmer of Fort Wayne, IN. It has light marks and fade. $95
CC-599. ORLANDO! I've never seen a cabinet card from Orlando, FL before. There's a good chance this image was taken on what is Disney land today... The date was March 11, 1884. There are also some pencil notations on the back. I don't know what they mean. I'm guessing the people are sitting outside of their house. The photo has some light marks and one that looks like a splatter, just touching the man on the right and moving up towards the woman. I'm guessing it could be cleaned off, but I never like to try. $50
CC-597. IN A CIRCLE. I love circle images of any sort and this one has a nice profile to boot. There are light marks on the surface. $22
CW-591. GREAT TINTING. That blue sash is just wonderful. His hair and face are also tinted, as well as the chair. The image has light scuffing in the center. The photographer was J.A. Todd of Sacramento, CA. $75
CC-369. A REAL ORGAN. Was he the craftsman or the young organist? This image has no identification at all. Condition is good, with light scuffing. $65
CW-590. THE FOTOGRAPHER. Ah, the made up word. This couple must have just gotten married. I like the odd, little statue on the table. There is light scuffing on the image. $22
CC-598. TRIPTIC. I love these multi-image presentations. This is a nice example. The back reads, "Your friend Jennie Hayan Jackson 399 So. Lafayette St. Grand Rapids, Mich." The name makes me wonder if the woman was the photographer's wife or even the photographer herself. The image has some light marks and a scattering of tiny spots. $85
Other Photos

RPPC-518. BORED KID. He's got a little pipe in his mouth and a watch in his hand. His name was Richard Earle and he was 3 on 12/26/20. The photo has a few marks. $24
SNAP-324. BACK ALLEY. This image from May 1899 comes from an album of images from the south and I'm guessing it could be Kentucky. It measures 4 x 5 and is mounted to a piece of album page. Condition is good. $28
OP-566. CUTE KIDS. A nice studio shot by Sidney V. Webb. The image measures 3. 75 x 4.75 and has light marks. $18
OP-182. RACING W. 10TH ST. This is a great action shot. The horses' hooves are off the ground and the one on the right let out a big breath as the photographer clicked the shutter. Both horses and sleds are in sharp focus. The photographer obviously knew how to capture motion. The image is much less yellow than the scan. I'm sorry I couldn't get it completely right. There is one mark on the left edge, probably glue. The image measures 4 x 6.5. $75
SNAP-320. A PAIR OF PAIRS. Here we have the untinted version and then the tinted one. The photos look like contact prints and are roughly 1.5 x 1.25. Their condition is good. I especially like the green sky... $40
CW-592. WHAT'S GOING ON? I thought magic trick, but I really don't have a clue. The back reads, "Jan 2nd 1919. Thursday 11-30 A.M. Mr. Stevenson (operating)." But operating what?! Anyway, the photo is silvered and has some light marks. It measures 5.5 x 3.5. $20
RPPC-520. ROSEY COUPLE. There are some light marks on this gold-trimmed card. $15
SNAP-319. AT THE SHORE. Isn't that white bearded man a great character? Each of these images is 3.25 square. The two I scanned together have some edge and corner wear. $25
SNAP-321. LOOKS LIKE A... Pencil sharpener? This snapshot seems to have been used in some kind of publication, judging from the markings. It is in good condition and measures 4 x 5. $45
OP-564. GREAT COLLAR! I love those stripes. These two sections must have been one long card, but at some point someone snipped them apart. Each half is 3.5 x 6. Condition is good. $30
SNAP-322. PEEKING OUT. A modern camera with a flash would have fleshed out this kid's face, but here it is in shadow. He holds some blocks and perhaps he's looking out of a playhouse. The image is 4 x 5 with some extra at the top and bottom. There are a few light marks on the surface. $12
RPPC-521. DAUBS OF PAINT. Clarence and Ella sent this postcard out for Christmas of 1949. Condition is good. $15
SNAP-323. A SHIP. I know nothing more about it than what you see here. The cyanotype is in good condition and is 3.5 inches square. $24
OP-563. ANOTHER COOL HAT. I had a cool hat on the last page too. This pair of photobooth images are from the same period. Each has a few light marks. $15
OP-565. WATER AND CAR. So this must have been taken from a boat. The focus is very good so it must have been a calm day. The photo is postcard sized and in good condition. $25
RPPC-519. ICE WOMAN. So here we have some kind of advertising stunt about a woman encased in ice. Luckily we see that she got out somehow. Note she was wearing a bathing suit in there. Shiver! The images are probably from the LA area. Each is signed, "Best Wishes, Chad." Condition is good with a little fade on each. $135
